Gear Updates and More

My Brooks Cascadia 5 shoes now have 100+ miles on them.  I like these shoes very much because of the way they fit.  I can wear them loose or tight and they still feel good.  Even with the laces very tight, there are no uncomfortable pressure points.  They grip the ground so well that I have actually changed the way I run steep downhills.  Good shoes.

Carrying water in my stomach instead of in bottles or bags is still working out well, especially since it has not been too hot.  Today I was able to get water midway through the run, so I wasn't even very thirsty at the end.  Still curious to try this on hot days and runs longer than 15 miles.  I sometimes suspect that the reason I got so sick at the Bulldog 50K is because I drank way too much water.

Since I'm not carrying anything with me, I no longer need pockets.  So today I exchanged the usual cargo shorts for a pair of compression shorts.  They're like bicycling shorts (it would look funny to run in those!) except there is no padding in the butt.   I had a feeling they would be comfortable because I've worn cycling shorts for up to 8 hours without any issues.  They were, and they also held everything in place so there was no chafing even though I didn't lube anywhere.  It felt a little weird to run in shorts like this, but I remember thinking it was weird when I first started wearing cycling shorts, too.  We'll see...

My left IT band has been sore after my last few runs, as well as the outside of my left knee.  The skin on the outside of that knee is actually a little numb for some reason.  Well, yesterday I had a revelation - aches and pains do not just happen, they each have a cause.  Hmm.  I did some research and found exercises to strengthen my hip abductor muscles.  Wow! My IT band felt better almost immediately.  After today's hilly 11.6 miler it still feels good.  The outside of my knee feels better, too.
