Hiking and Biking at Mammoth

Four days of hiking and biking left me dehydrated and wanting for calories, but I had a blast! The first day we hiked 14 miles from Reds Meadow to Iva Bell Hot Springs. About a mile into the hike, we came to Rainbow Falls.

The picture below is of Fish Valley.  We have about 5 miles left to go.

Our camp near Iva Bell Hot Springs.  The temperature that night was just above freezing as we were relaxing in the hot spring pool that was about 100 degrees F!

In the morning we hiked the 14 miles back to Reds Meadow.  The next day we went cross country at Mono Lake.  There are mineral formations called "Tufas" around the lake, and a nice cinder cone island in the middle of the lake.

Crossing a stream that drains into Mono Lake. I hit a big rock and stopped just as this picture was taken.

The next day we drove to Minaret Summit for some Black Diamond downhilling.  Here is a view of the "Minarets" from the trail head.

Back in the '80's, the earth opened up in this earthquake fault, technically a seismic fissure.

Inside the seismic fissure.
Downhilling on my ancient hardtail.
